Sustainability

What does sustainability mean to us?

At Novvi, we believe that performance is sustainability.  It’s not just where the feedstock comes from, it’s also what your products can do. Whether we help your EV go farther on a single charge, reduce the required maintenance on your equipment or lower the PUE in your immersion cooled server rack, we believe that products that improve efficiency, lower energy usage and increase durability will have the biggest impact on CO2 emissions.

Working together to make it real

The existing carbon accounting systems are not outlined in a way for the entire value chain to work together towards this goal of true sustainability.  We believe every company in the value chain needs to be part of the conversation. While differences in each application can make measurement complex, if we are serious about slowing global warming we need to open up the conversation to create real impact.  Below are some examples:

There are two main categories of Scope 3 emissions where customers are interested in Novvi’s products:

Scope 3, Category 1: Purchased Goods and Services

This looks at the LCA of everything in your bill of materials: the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint from each of your suppliers in raw materials, transportation, manufacturing and energy usage. Many companies with sustainability objectives are focused on this category, and for some categories of products this plays a large part. What we don’t want to lose sight of is the larger potential.

Scope 3, Category 11: Use of Sold Products

In some industries, the energy and CO2 savings provided by a high performance product designed to last longer and maximize efficiency in-use will far outweigh the carbon footprint of the product itself. Lubricants are a good example of this: they are often a relatively small part of the bill of materials, but the energy savings from reducing friction, preventing wear and prolonging the lifetime of other parts in the system allow them to have a much larger CO2 impact in-use. This requires taking a total cost of ownership mindset, rather than focusing only on using the cheapest components that need to be replaced over and over.

Sourcing responsibly

Yes, our 100% renewable products have a negative carbon footprint. You can stop at using the product as a renewable alternative to a petroleum based product, but these products were also designed to be different, because we want to make a real difference for our planet. We need to be doing as much as we can, and we want to work with you to do it.
